Now I Know Why I Work

…and don’t ever let me go on vacation again, please! I can do a lot of damage in one week – to my waistline (by which I mean my derriere) and to the store’s bank balance. The first thing on my agenda was grocery shopping. Came home with everything I usually deny myself and have steadily eaten my way through it all week long. Hey, I’m on vacation, right? Then, when eating too much didn’t fill up all the leisure time I had, I proceeded to order yarn. I wandered through websites that I usually avoid – too tempting! – and just went for it. So at some point, the store will be awash with lovely Smooshy Cashmere from Dream in Color

and equally lovely Mini-Maiden from Handmaiden Fine Yarns,

and I feel no remorse whatsoever. Unlike the regret I felt this morning when I got on the scale.

Plus I made myself a sweater. Not that I needed another sweater, but I like to do this now and then, something just for me, not a model in a new yarn for the store or a class project. It’s a pretty standard, rather old-fashioned sweater, published years ago as Classic Cables #316

by Classic Elite, a (sadly) defunct yarn company, and does not seem to available for purchase on line, even though the designer is still working. Anyway, here it is, modified to suit myself but a bit awkward around the neckline because of the cables.

Oh, well, maybe I’ll wear a twee little scarf with it like the model did. No, I won’t but because the color is neutral and the neckline is a simple crew (I toyed with a turtleneck and decided against) I can wear almost any of the beautiful shawls or scarves I have.

And, speaking of shawls, last summer we had a mystery shawl knit-along with Casapinka that was a lot of fun. She’s doing it again starting in August, and even though I’m not organizing anything for the store, I might make the shawl. Here’s a link to the information that’s available so far. It calls for 4 skeins of fingering weight in any combination of solids, semi-solids, speckles or hand-dyes. I checked (part of) my stash and came up with a few possibles, then narrowed it down when I realized I have nothing in blue or purple, shawl-wise, so this is what I’m thinking about for now.

(We can help fill out your stash with the perfect colorway, if you can’t come up with 4 that work together.)

I hear you! “I need another shawl like I need a hole in the head.” But let’s face it, it’s not about need. It’s about the joy of making, it’s about the weeks of fulfillment, it’s about satisfying that need to bring fiber, stitches, and design together to make something lovely, it’s about the art of combining beautiful colors in a way that gives you goose bumps. So, yes, I need another shawl like I need another box of Moose Munch in my pantry. Wait a minute, I don’t think I finished that yet…hey, I have one more day of vacation…
