Thinking About Fall

As hot as it’s been, I’ve been dreaming about fall knitting already.  Not only that, I’ve been buying new fall yarns and planning what to make.  Look at these classic colors in Scout, a lovely heathered wool from Kelbourne Woolens:

I would happily have a sweater in any of these colors and eventually I will, and maybe you will too!  Meanwhile, I have a skein or two and think I’ll make a hat, just so I can work with it.

I’ve designed a cute little scrunch-neck tunic, that could also be a dress if you have a dress-friendly lifestyle. It’s a top-down raglan, with long sleeves that I did first and flat but you can wait till the end and do them in the round, with a split hem if you want it and a slight A-line if you want it.

I like it very much and I’ll wear it a lot, even though the little cable detail

which is the only decorative detail of the sweater didn’t end up where I wanted it.  I wanted it right under the bust to give an empire-ish impression, and I tried it on several times to get it right.  However, here’s a little piece of advice for women of a certain age:  If you’re trying to place something just under your bust, try it on wearing a bra.  Otherwise…well, you can see what happens:

The cable is closer to my waist than my bust when I have some supportive underwear on!  Oh, well, that’s what the design process is all about. Or the aging process.  Both. Whatever. The pattern will be written for DK weight and I hope a few of you like it enough to test it for me.

I also finished Bennett Creek, using Noro’s new summer yarn Sonata.

I love the yarn; it’s a light blend of cotton, silk, and synthetic that has its own texture and heathered colors.  I changed the pattern a bit, keeping the split hem, but making front and back the same length.  I raised the front neckline by about 2 inches (and it’s still not a high neckline, but very wearable.)

The pattern calls for reverse stockinette throughout, and that’s the way I made it, but I think it would look better if I had just done reverse stockinette around the cable and knit the rest in stockinette.  The yarn has so much going on that you really don’t need the extra texture.  But I like the sweater a lot and will wear it to death!  It’s a nice fall design as well, could be done in a light wool, and may become a class…

…and speaking of classes, it’s last call for July classes.  It’s summer, so there’s room in almost all our classes for one or two more people.  If you would like to jump in to make (clockwise from upper right) our pretty Paige Mitts, the Celandine Beanie, the Abulon Cowl, or a classic ribbed hat, now is the time!
