Spring and Summer Knitting

I love doing easy things for summer.  Easy shapes, open fabrics, fun colors – all are perfect for wearing in summer when it’s hot and you want nothing clingy, drab, or heavy.  Lightweight sweaters and shawls are still very useful, though, for cool evenings, for air-conditioned offices and restaurants, for outdoor concerts and morning walks.  This little cardigan I have to show you today is really fun to make, and I’ve named the pattern, which is really more a recipe than a strict pattern, “Beach Jacket.”  It can certainly be used as a cover-up for a bathing suit when you want to go from beach to restaurant:

Its simple shape means you can add length if you want.  Want longer sleeves?  Easy-peasy.  Don’t like stripes?  Work it in a solid – the textured stitch adds plenty of interest all by itself.

The texture is from the twisted and elongated stitches, called Veil Stitch, that you work every 4th row.

It’s fun to work and makes the knitting speed along.  There’s a slight V to the neckline, so you can pin the fronts (or add a button if you like) for more coverage.

I made this model in Sol Degradé, a 100% cotton ribbon that adds its own texture as well as color:

It took just a smooch over 2 balls, so less than 500 yards to make a generous medium size.  We have nice solid and dappled colors in Tahiti, another cotton ribbon, and the jacket would be very sweet in Katia’s Bulky Cotton, which I showed you last week.  Since it took me about 3 days to knit it, I may just make it in all these yarns!

A reminder that the store will be closed Saturday through Tuesday this coming weekend.  Have a nice long weekend!!
