On A Mission

This weekend, I was on a mission to finish transforming this very nice sleeveless tunic

into this very nice long-sleeved sweater:

Although I like the original design, I have one or two sleeveless sweaters and don’t wear them much because I have to have something underneath that looks right, that isn’t too heavy, that doesn’t have a collar of its own, etc, etc., and I like simple dressing.  So I modified, and then it became a good wearable sweater that you can toss on with or without another layer.  With a collared shirt, it’s a classic tailored look.  Otherwise, it’s a great casual look over jeans or leggings that is super-comfortable all day long.

Mods:

Front and back are same length instead of the back having longer ribbing.  I added short rows to the back to keep it from flaring out. And I added about 2 – 3 inches to the overall length.

I added a few more inches of the yoke design than is called for in the pattern.  It’s a nice knit-purl gansey motif that deserved a little more space, I thought.

I added long sleeves (obviously) instead of having just a bit of ribbing around the armhole.

And I changed the neckline from a ribbed turtleneck (which, by the way, I love) to a rather shallow crew neck (for a bit more versatility.)

There are loads of possibilities with this sweater!  It will definitely be a class in the fall (hooray for fall – it’s coming soon!), and you can decide your own version.  And if you sign up early enough, you can pick any color of Scout, a beautiful heathered wool from Kelbourne Woolens (or choose another of our lovely DK weight yarns.)  Class details will follow soon!

And speaking of classes, Deb Cech’s Design-Your-Own Scarf class begins this Thursday.  If you are an advanced beginner who knows the basics and wants to take your knitting to the next level, this is the class for you.  Learn how to change colors, do cables, work stitch patterns including lace, follow pattern instructions, weave in ends and other wondrous and necessary knitting magic, this is the class for you.  There are still spaces available – please call the shop (610-373-1622).

I’ve started a new project with the Smooshy with Cashmere that came in last week.  It’s a one-skein shawl called Blue Whale, designed by Stephen West in his early days, before he went all technicolor.  It’s a good shape that swirls around you and stays put, and I think it will look lovely in Smooshy:

These subtle “neutrals” have wonderful flecks of color that really enhance the knitting.  This is as far as I got until my hands declared that I had challenged them enough this weekend and it was time for a rest:

Today, after I get my driver’s license renewed (ugh!) I will make some progress!
