End of August, and what a gorgeous month it’s been so far! We had no reason to suspect that August would include beautiful temperate days and cool nights and mornings. West Reading’s lovely old trees are changing from that bright summer green to a darker tone, heralding autumn. To the delight of the neighborhood squirrels, the old oaks are dropping acorns from a hundred feet up, sounding like shots and threatening to dent the tops of the cars parked underneath (or the heads of walkers!) Love it!!

You probably know that there are new classes listed, and they start very soon. My Book Club Cardigan class is full, but there are spaces in many others. Now that those last vacations before school are over (or maybe you take a quiet week off after Labor Day), take a peek and see if one of those wonderful projects can’t tempt you. Karen finished her Same But Different Cowl. It’s beautiful, and what a fun project to learn mosaic knitting:

This was a crazy mystery sock from Stephen West that Karen was working on this summer. For all you sock knitters out there, how nuts is this? Pleated squiggles, multiple directions, multi-colored short rows – everything you never thought of putting in a sock. Karen used a neutral speckly gray merino in Maryanne from Wonderland Yarns and several semi-solid mini skeins:

Once my cardigan was done (or as done as it was going to be for a while, since I played yarn chicken and lost) I started on a mystery knit shawl from Casapinka. It’s not a thing of beauty (and it won’t be presentable until it’s blocked) but I’m enjoying it anyway. Four colors of fingering-weight yarn, lots of different slip-stitch patterns and a definite change from my woolly cardy:

We just got in these adorable little kits!

These little clear plastic heart-shaped boxes hold all kinds of goodies that will bail you out of trouble if you’re knitting on the go: scissors, needle stoppers, a variety of markers, a spool of plastic cord for trying on or putting stitches on hold, and more!

It’s a sweet gift for new knitters, but you should treat yourself. It’ll fit into any knitting bag and is the perfect size to bring to class or to take on a road trip.

New yarns are starting to arrive – it’s still a thrill for me! I love this time of year. This is a new yarn from Juniper Moon Farm called Iris – suri alpaca, silk, and merino. Lots of fuzzy yardage and soft, soft, soft. I’m doing a simple seeded rib stitch scarf to work on at the shop – come see, touch, and love!
