Okay, here’s the situation: I’m working on a sweet jacket called Spencer
in a new color of Berroco’s Sesame yarn. It’s pretty, it’s fun, I did some re-write to avoid sewing things up at the end (which was probably what the model was looking so grouchy about), and it’s all going well. The body and sleeves are done. I’m about a third of the way through an enormous shawl collar done in garter stitch on small needles
and, of course, I’m bored.
Logically, I should be looking for a tricky small project that I can finish in no time that will capture my attention and bring quick satisfaction, then let me get back to this long slog of a collar.
Instead, this is what has gotten my attention:
This is the Glow Shawl by Jennifer Lang, which is a blanket-sized square shawl in – guess what? – garter stitch on small needles!
Oh, I’ve tried to ignore it, diligently working on the jacket, telling myself to look for a little lacy cowl or a pair of mitts or something like that. But all the while I’ve been stealthily lining up gorgeous colors of fingering weight yarn in various mouthwatering shades when I have a few minutes alone at the shop. I snuck these home and now I stare at them all the time:
Aren’t they pretty? Wouldn’t they make a great shawl, blanket, car tarp, house cozy?
So obviously, I need an intervention. Someone needs to talk me down from this cliff I’m about to jump off. Come to my house and steal these yarns so I’m not haunted by the rosy picture of the breath-taking color transitions and big wrappy comfort that could be mine with just a thousand hours of garter-stitch in the round. Tempt me with tiny projects, like an amigurumi coronavirus pincushion. Or maybe the Border Patrol could stop by and throw me into an unmarked van and hold me until I swear I won’t cast on.
Really, the situation is escalating and something must be done!
