Afghan Knit-Along!

I’ve taken it into my head to make a block afghan, and I wonder if anyone else would like to knit along with me?  Here’s what I’m going to make:

only not in clown colors.  Here’s what I love about this afghan:

  1. You can make 20 different blocks, or 20 blocks all the same, or pick a few favorite stitch patterns and make 4 or 5 of each.  You can do it all in one color, pick 20 different colors, or pick a few and mix them up.
  2. I’m estimating that a 20-block afghan will take around 12 – 14 balls of Encore using half a dozen colors, so the cost is very reasonable.  On the other hand, if you want something more luxurious, any worsted weight yarn will work (read on for a great suggestion.)
  3. Every block begins and ends with the same number of stitches so you can make panels instead of separate blocks and save a bunch of sewing.  If you count rows so that each block has the same number, sewing the panels together will be the easiest seaming you’ve ever done.
  4. The stitch patterns are interesting and if you’re a basic knitter, you’ll learn a ton by working through the patterns.  If you’re an advanced knitter, you’ll have fun and probably learn a little something, too.

So with this in mind, we just received a lovely array of Encore Tweed:

I like the tweeds because they blend very well with each other, and therefore with many decors.  I chose these:

and then added navy because I wanted to.  You can make a lot of nice combinations from these colors:

And if you want to step it up a notch, you can use our beautiful array of colors in Plymouth’s Worsted Merino Superwash.  Gradients, anybody?

Just like Encore, you can machine wash and dry this yarn, but it’s lovely fine merino wool. So the stitch definition and your knitting pleasure and satisfaction just got multiplied!

We’re going to be working on this Saturday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m. before the store opens, starting August 20th.  Before then, you need to sign up, choose your yarn and colors, purchase at least one skein of each color so you can make a plan (then, like me, you can throw your plan out the window and do whatever you feel like!)  I’ll give you a tentative schedule of the blocks we’re going to cover over the next month or so, and you can get started with a block you already know how to do (I won’t be covering the stockinette stitch block, for example.)  Every time you come to a Saturday morning session, you’ll pay $5 – please, no cards for this! That’s it!  I hope you’ll join us!
